Walks in Central Mull
Following are some fairly easy and popular
walks in Central Mull. Click on images to enlarge.

| |
Macquarrie's Masoleum |
|
| |
This is a short easy walk, less than a mile there and back up the
rhododendron lined drive. Park on the Salen to Gruline road, about half a
mile befor e
the road junction to Killiechronan there is a signpost on the left up to the
MacQuarie Mausoleum. This simple tomb contains the body of Mull man Lachlan
MacQuarie (1761-1824), considered by many to be the ‘Father’ of modern
Australia following his decade-long spell as
Governor of New South Wales. Return the same way.

Cnoc an Sroine - Salen |
|
| |
Park at the north of Salen village by the public toilets and walk north
along the bay. This first half mile is along the road although if the tide
is out the shore line can be walked. This is one of the best places on the
island to spot seals, otters and various sea birds. Follow the shore until
the telephone box is reached and then turn left up the private road to
Glenaros House. At the top of the hill past the antiquated farm-machinery go through the last gate by the side
of the holiday cottage. Follow the track heading for the ruins of the hill
fort, Cnoc an Sroine. It is worth taking a detour to climb this hill, there
are outstanding views of Loch na Keal to the west and Aros Castle to the
east. Rejoin the track which starts to go downhill, cross the burn and once
the well-defined track is reached turn left. The path is very muddy in
places so be prepared to make a detour around the boggy areas. There are
some fine viewpoints down the Sound of Mull and to Glenforsa airfield. The
path finally drops down through the woodland and comes back into the village
close to the carpark.

MacKinnon's Cave |
|
| |
Check tide times before commencing this walk as the cave is only
accessible below low tide and don't forget a torch to explore the cave. The
starting point of the walk is on the farm road to Balmeanach on the B8035
just beyond the Gribun rocks. Park just before the cattle grid and go
through the gate by the farm outbuildings and follow the fence to the top of
the cliffs. Dogs must be kept on a lead. A winding path leads downwards and
a short walk along the coast brings you to the cave. Just before the cave
there is a waterfall and then some large rocks washed up by the tide at the
mouth of the cave, which have to be scrambled over. Return the same way.

Cill an Ailein |
|
| |
This is another short walk which has been w ell waymarked by the Forestry
Enterprise. Park in the carpark beyond the Forestry Enterprise offices at Aros Bridge, just north of Salen. The route is signposted from here and can
be done in either direction. For more information and photographs on this
fascinating graveyard please
