Walking on the Isle of Mull

The Isle of Mull is the ideal island to take a walking holiday, as it has some of the worlds most magnificent scenery, dramatic sea cliffs, an abundant wildlife and some wild remote places that are only accessible by foot.

There is a combination of many varied habitats that the island has to offer, woodland, farmland and coastal. Forestry Commission Scotland have developed a walking network on the island that offers walkers shelter amongst tree lined forests. There are walks along rugged and gentle coastlines, and for the experienced walker more mountainous terrain, including the island's only Munro, Ben More.

The paths on the island are mostly well walked but not necessarily well way-marked, however, they should be easily found by the average walker. It needs to be stressed that many walks on the island are on very basic paths that can be muddy or boulder strewn and which will, on occasion, require clambering over rocks. Please click here to see the clothing and footwear recommendation page.

Hiking is not a word that is widely used in the United Kingdom, the term 'walk' can cover a range of  activities from a gentle coastal stroll to the ascent of Ben More, the island's only Munro at 3169 feet.  Please be aware that this volcanic mountain is magnetic and so compasses are unreliable and make an accurate reading impossible.

Holiday Mull has put together some short and fairly easy recommended walks and these pages can be accessed by area using the menu to the right. Please also read our equipment and safety pages. If you require any further information or would prefer a guided walk please contact Ruth at Mull Magic. She is always very happy to give free advice to walkers. Please check back to these pages soon as they are constantly being updated with new routes, information and photographs. We eventually hope to add timings and grid references for GPS and map users.
