Practical Plants Activity Day

Hands-on workshops and demonstrations about practical uses of plants including folklore, arts and crafts, wild food foraging and cooking. Also walks, talks, a children’s drop-in activity centre, and cafe. This year will have some familiar events and some brand new. Join the ranger for wildlife spotting and knowledge at either the Loch Torr or Fishnish Wildlife Hides. There’ll be ID guides, books and information on hand. Plus investigate the catch from the (harmless) overnight moth trap at Loch Torr (weather dependent).

Bring: Binoculars if you have them. Clothing appropriate to the weather.

Bunessan Biodiversity

Meet the ranger in the grounds of the Ross of Mull Historical Centre to investigate what’s flowering, singing, flying, creeping or crawling in the mini wildflower meadow, amongst the trees or on the stone walls of the old mill. We’ll set a (harmless) moth trap overnight so come at 10am if you are interested in seeing what we’ve found! Time: drop-in any time between 10am and 1pm

One Planet Picnic

Enjoy a walk at Tireragan nature reserve and perhaps a beautiful sandy beach, for a One Planet Picnic! Are you up for the challenge of preparing your packed lunch with as much local, organic, seasonal, ethical produce as possible? You could check out Mull’s great local producers for meat, cheese, jams, chutneys, salad, bread or biscuits, or try a recipe using something grown in your own garden...and don’t forget fair-trade snacks like fruit, nuts or chocolate! Along the way we might have a chance to supplement our supplies with some foraging, we’ll look for wildlife as we go and talk about why this food is good for us and good for the planet. Come and join in!

Skydancer Spotting

Join the Ranger Service for an easy going guided walk to search for Hen Harriers - Mull has fantastic populations of this raptor, a species struggling elsewhere in the country. We’ll also watch out for white-tailed eagle, short-eared owl, buzzard and kestrel.

Erraid Adventure

A walk exploring the natural and cultural history of this tidal island (setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Kidnapped’), with options to stop off at the seal colony, lighthouse observatory and a beautiful sandy beach. You may wish to bring a packed lunch and explore the many lovely beaches around Knockvologan before the walk.

Elephants in the Undergrowth

Join the Ranger Service for morning of moths at Loch Torr. We’ll investigate the moth catch from the harmless overnight trap and records will contribute to Scotland’s moth conservation. Then, we’ll search for elephants in the undergrowth - the Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar! An incredible caterpillar like none you’ve ever seen before.
