Kintra Seawatch

Join the ranger service and the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust to look out for marine mammals such as bottlenose dolphin, harbour porpoise, Risso’s dolphin and minke whale. From the headland at Kintra we’ll have wide views over the Sound of Iona, across to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles and northern Mull.

Bring: Clothing appropriate to the weather, sturdy footwear as the ground can be wet and uneven, binoculars if you have them.

Loch Torr Guided Walk

Join the ranger for a wildlife orientated guided walk. We’ll watch out for eagles and other raptors as well as reptiles, including adders, common lizard and slow-worms. Plus, weather allowing, we’ll enjoy the thriving insect life such as four-spotted chaser, golden ringed dragonfly and large red damselflies..

Staffa Seawatching Evening

Join the ranger service and the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust in association with Turus Mara for a special evening trip to the island of Staffa. We’ll look out for marine mammals and birds during the journey, and from the clifftops, also spending time at the puffin colony.

This includes approx. 2 hours on the island and 2 hours on the boat

Headland Walk & Watch with HWDT

Join the Ranger Service and the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust for a guided Headland walk at Caliach Point - the North West tip of Mull. We’ll walk out to the point, watching out for local wildlife including eagles and ravens. Once at the vantage point we’ll focus on the seas - you can learn how to survey from land and we’ll look for harbour porpoise, bottlenose dolphin, common dolphin and maybe even minke whale, plus numerous seabird species.

Coronation Meadow Day, Magical Moths & Beautiful Butterflies

Come along to the Coronation Meadow Day to celebrate the stunning flowers and associated wildlife. The Ranger Service will provide a Moth Trapping workshop, we’ll study the overnight catch and you can get the lowdown on how to get started yourself. Following a picnic lunch we’ll focus on the Coronation Meadow, particularly the butterfly species found there (weather dependent, we’ll have other plans if it rains).

Join the ranger service to explore this stunning coastal landscape below cliffs, with plenty of wildflowers, waterfalls, native woodland and seashore habitats. Spot seals and potentially other marine mammals, perhaps an eagle will make an appearance too!

Meet the ranger in the grounds of the Ross of Mull Historical Centre to investigate what’s flowering, singing, flying, creeping or crawling in the mini wildflower meadow, amongst the trees or on the stone walls of the old mill. Enjoy a walk at Tireragan nature reserve and perhaps a beautiful sandy beach, for a One Planet Picnic! Are you up for the challenge of preparing your packed lunch with as much local, organic, seasonal, ethical produce as possible? You could check out Mull’s great local producers for meat, cheese, jams, chutneys, salad, bread or biscuits, or try a recipe using something grown in your own garden...and don’t forget fair-trade snacks like fruit, nuts or chocolate! Along the way we might have a chance to supplement our supplies with some foraging, we’ll look for wildlife as we go and talk about why this food is good for us and good for the planet. Come and join in!

A walk exploring the natural and cultural history of this tidal island (setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Kidnapped’), with options to stop off at the seal colony, lighthouse observatory and a beautiful sandy beach. Elephants in the Undergrowth

Join the Ranger Service for morning of moths at Loch Torr. We’ll investigate the moth catch from the harmless overnight trap and records will contribute to Scotland’s moth conservation. Then, we’ll search for elephants in the undergrowth - the Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar! An incredible caterpillar like none you’ve ever seen before.
