The story of Mull and Iona

The Isle of Mull is formed by some of Britain's oldest rocks on top of which lie some of the newest, formed by one of the biggest volcanic events the world has ever known.

Sixty five Million years ago huge flows of lava spread over the older rocks of much of north west Scotland, including Mull and Iona, and beyond. Nearly all the dinosaurs became extinct worldwide.

The rocks on Iona are even older than those of Mull and only a trace of the volcanic rocks remain.

What you see today is the result of a further 65 million years of erosion by water, wind and ice.

Humans are relative new-comers, but in a short time we too have had our effect on the environment

The Quest is an Adventure Quiz. Some of the questions are about the natural world around you here, and some about what mankind has done to shape it

Good luck with your quest.
