BALAMORY

Tobermory,
on the Isle of Mull was selected for the Children's TV programme Balamory,
because of its beautiful location, and, more importantly, its multi-coloured
houses. The theme of the programme is based around what happens in
and around each coloured house.
The producer of Balamory,
Brian Jamison says, " I wanted to set the series in a Scottish village and
looked at many locations on the mainland. Tobermory was chosen because
of the wonderful vista of coloured houses and it is a child friendly town on
an island. I was going to keep the name of 'Tobermory' for the series
but because of the connection with the 'Wombles', the name Balamory was
chosen instead".
Balamory
is currently being shown on 'CBeebies' on B.B.C. Many of the coloured
houses actually exist and are positioned in, and around, the town of Tobermory.
However, because the main studios are down in Glasgow, the Nursery School
shots are taken there. Also the castle belonging to Archie, the inventor
is not on the island and is at
Fenton
Tower in North Berwick.

Otherwise,
most of the filming was done live in Tobermory, with the help of our own
Nursery group, fire crew, local attractions and businesses.
One of the main attractions used
for the filming (second series) was
Mull Narrow Gauge Railway. The railway is not in Tobermory itself,
but is near to the ferry at Craignure, and runs between the ferry and Torosay
Castle. (not pink sadly)

to Mull, pick up a very good brochure/map to help you find your way
around the village. This has been produced by our Tourist office
and Holiday Mull.
